How to breed the fastest ground mounts in Palworld

Flying mounts get the glory, but a fast ground mount is the workhorse of most playthroughs — cheaper to obtain, quicker over short trips, and far easier to fight from. This guide lists the fastest rideable ground Pals you can breed, the cheapest verified route for each, and the passives that turn a decent runner into a blur.

Why breed a ground mount at all

Flyers win every long-distance race, but ground mounts win the early and mid game. A ground-mount saddle unlocks earlier and costs less than most flying saddles, the Pals themselves spawn at lower levels and breed from far cheaper parent pairs, and riding low to the ground means you can swing your own weapon and command your team without the awkward height of a flyer. Most players breed their first serious mount on four legs, then add a flyer later — and keep using the ground mount for resource runs, where speed between nearby nodes matters more than altitude. Type your owned Pals into the Palworld Breeding Calculator and set the mount you want as the target to find your shortest route.

Early starters: Eikthyrdeer and Direhowl

Your first ground mount should cost almost nothing. Eikthyrdeer spawns in the wild at level 6 and is one of the best early rides in the game; the engine lists 99 parent pairs for it, and the easiest is Cattiva plus Flopie — both level-1 catches you can grab in the starting area. Direhowl also spawns wild at level 6, has 106 listed parent pairs, and its easiest route is Bristla plus Flopie, again both level 1. Either one gives you a mount long before you could catch a flyer, and both are perfect first breeding projects: catch a male and a female, keep the fastest child, and you already have the start of a speed bloodline.

Mid-game speed: Rayhound and Univolt

Once the early game is behind you, the electric duo takes over. Rayhound spawns wild at level 20, has 357 parent pairs in the engine, and its easiest route pairs Dinossom (level 10) with Mimog (level 5). Univolt spawns wild at level 14, lists 178 parent pairs, and its cheapest route is Fuddler (level 1) plus Mimog (level 5). Both are noticeably faster than the starters and cheap enough to breed repeatedly, which matters: the mid game is when you start rolling for speed passives in earnest, and you want a species you can afford to hatch a dozen eggs of.

Fenglope: the fastest ground mount

Fenglope is widely regarded as the fastest ground mount in Palworld, and breeding is by far the cheapest way to get one. It spawns wild at level 25, but the engine lists 457 parent pairs — and the easiest is Sweepa (level 11) plus Mimog (level 5), both easy early catches. That is a level-25 mount from parents you can own in the first hours of a playthrough. Once you have your first Fenglope, the real project begins: keep one male and one female, and breed generation after generation, keeping the fastest child each time. A Fenglope line bred for speed over five or six generations feels like a different species from a wild-caught one.

Pyrin: the fiery alternative

If you want a fast mount that also fights, Pyrin is the pick. This Fire mount spawns wild at level 29 and the engine lists 225 parent pairs; the easiest route is Amione (level 9) plus Mossanda Lux (level 15). Pyrin is fast, tough, and its Fire typing shreds the Grass-type Pals that fill the mid-game zones — so it doubles as a combat team member while your pure speed line is still being bred. It is the best answer to the question "which one mount should I invest cakes in?" for players who want speed and damage in a single saddle.

Speed passives: the real multiplier

Species speed is only the starting point. Movement-speed passives such as Swift, Runner and Legend add on top of whatever mount you ride, and they are inherited through breeding — which is why serious players breed a dozen eggs of one species and keep only the fastest child as the next parent. Our passive skills guide covers inheritance odds and bloodline building in full, but the ground-mount version is simple: take your best Fenglope or Pyrin, cross it with any Pal carrying the speed passive you want, hatch several eggs, keep the fastest child, and repeat. Three generations of selective breeding beat any wild-caught mount, whatever its species. Do the same with a flying mount later using our flying mounts guide — the method is identical.

Mistakes that waste cakes

The classic mistake is breeding the parents you already own instead of the cheapest pair. Two strong mid-game Pals average out to something mid-tier, because the egg is decided by the average of the parents' breeding power — always check the pair in the calculator before spending a cake. The second mistake is catching a wild Fenglope at level 25 when a Sweepa plus Mimog pair would have hatched one for a fraction of the effort. The third is stopping at one egg: the first child is rarely the fastest, so hatch several, keep the quickest, and breed the next generation from it. And do not use pairs from pre-1.0 guides — breeding values changed across the Paldeck in version 1.0, and old mount pairs often no longer produce the same child.

Common questions

What is the fastest ground mount in Palworld?

Fenglope is widely regarded as the fastest ground mount. It spawns wild at level 25, and this site's engine lists 457 parent pairs for it — the easiest being Sweepa plus Mimog, both low-level catches.

What is the best early ground mount to breed?

Direhowl or Eikthyrdeer. Both spawn wild at level 6 and breed from level-1 parents: Bristla plus Flopie for Direhowl, or Cattiva plus Flopie for Eikthyrdeer.

How do you breed Fenglope cheaply?

Breed Sweepa (level 11) with Mimog (level 5). Both are easy early catches, and this is the engine's easiest listed route to Fenglope — far cheaper than hunting one at level 25.

Which passives make ground mounts faster?

Movement-speed passives such as Swift, Runner and Legend. Breed your fastest child back into the line each generation — the passives stack with the mount's base speed.

Is a ground mount or a flying mount better?

Flyers win long distances, but ground mounts are cheaper to obtain and saddle early, faster over short trips, and easier to fight from. Most players breed a good ground mount first and a flyer second.
